The idea is simple.
Instead of redoing the jetty, we're going to turn it into Snapper Rocks like wave (not the whole superbank obviously). How? Used cargo containers - they are really cheap - deployment shouldn't be too bad (cost wise). Likely under $300k project. Shouldn't need a "study" (though they'll try...) The cargo containers are only 8.5 feet high but they stack... We going to add some out at the end of the jetty that angle northwest, and then more at the end of that set that angle mostly west, to create a nook out at the end to trap sand. In addition to the sandbar reshaping from the trapped sand, then wedge off the containers at the end should push through extra energy. Thoughts? I think Kelly could make something happen. We need to get him reaching out to the county commisioners... Edited: 06/20/2024 at 07:52 AM by TunnelVision |

We all have dreams! I remember thinking about improving surf spots all the time back when i was younger. Australians have the right idea on improving beaches just for the surf. Here, we just want to protect the condos. Bleh.

It's not just Sebastian Inlet that no longer breaks. Steamer Lane's glory days may be over as the point around the Santa Cruz Lighthouse is literally disappearing
"The recent erosion may negatively impact the wave quality for high tide south swells at Steamer Lane due to the rocks falling directly into the area where waves typically break during these surfing conditions."

I always thought about using old or broken concrete light pole placed off the beach perpendicular to the shore.

How should I list the ways that using metal boxes is beyond a horrible idea ..... alphabetically or numerically?

How should I list the ways that using metal boxes is beyond a horrible idea ..... alphabetically or numerically? Not to mention sand arrangement is not really the problem at the inlet, but rather the altered refraction characteristics off the jetty structure. So doesn't really address the problem. The Inlet wave was gifted by accident but is now likely lost forever, even if they tried to resurrect it they probably couldn't. I think our efforts would be better served on the renourishment problem. I do like the get Kelly involved idea though. I'm guessing there's a few folks on this forum whose phone call he'd answer ------------------------- "If I say it's safe to surf this beach, captain, then it's safe to surf this beach!" A sand pumping station (like pump house at palm beach inlet) would be a nice start. IIRC, it continued to break for a few yrs after the jetty rebuild.. Go back and look at all the old Mama G (RIP) pics for proof. Once they started pumping sand up north on a regular basis it lost its consistency.
Containers would just get destroyed first real power swell comes through. They would be put to better use as artificial reef / fish attractors a bit further out IMO. |

The sand at Monster Hole is so far out now that it causes swells to refract towards it and aggravates the north angle in which the swell hits the north jetty. It use to be so much deeper on the north side and the beach was much smaller. It would hold way more swell and even handle NE swell direction. I don't think a decent wedge setup will ever come back. It's amazing how weak it is now compared to the early days. Bummer.

Get rid of the 70ft. added to the end of the jetty which pointed due East. The extension bends to the.Northeast.End the renourishment projects by adding a sand bypass station at the Port(Canaveral) or, is that too much?

The jetty is for navigational purposes. Nothing will be added to it or taken away from it.

They added to it back in 2000/2001. The damage has already been done! The angle to the northeast wasn't needed! Thank you Army Craps of Engineers and those who supported the change.

"Navigation" is King!!
Like, if I read it correctly, the Cocoa Beach pier is in a "navigation" zone and Cannot be replaced if a storm takes it out. ------------------------- Dora Hates You |

Several (many ) years ago, I lived between 6th and 7th streets. My friends and neighbors
decided that we were tired of driving to SBI, NSB, Sharks Pit and the like. One evening while heavily intoxicated, we started talking about how we could make our own break. We talked about curb stones. So, on another evening of intoxication, we got in our cars and rounded up all the curbstones we could find in CB and MI. Randomly we started paddling out and dropping them in around 8 feet of water at high tide. We did this for around 3 months or so. We never did enough to change the break. I went out that way in my boat around 4 years ago. With all the beach renourishment I could not find the curbstones. The lesson that should be learned from all of this is: Dont fuck with mother nature. ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off. |

The problem with concrete is that the environment doesn't like it. You would think barnacles and coral would attach to it but they don't like it. They like limestone. The artificial reef programs now almost use limestone exclusively. I have a friend who had a reef of a couple hundred tons of limestone rock dropped in about 80' of ocean of Juno as his memorial. He died of brain cancer. Now he has a memorial reef in Juno called the Derrick Beckel memorial reef. This is the guy that built and got permits. That process took a long time. http://andrewredharrisfoundation.org/

Or maybe you stayed drunk for three months ------------------------- "If I say it's safe to surf this beach, captain, then it's safe to surf this beach!" Maybe, it was around 1970 or so. I was 17 and there was plenty of gold bud coming up from Columbia. ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. It can be added to for navigational purposes. For surfing... not so much. ------------------------- I was right. |

Before the jetty was built it was about the same as Spanny, a minor peak.
