The rescue started near the long jetty (to the left) and a small gang of lifeguards joined by Wedge regulars took advantage of a modest longshore current to the right to get to where it was actually possible to get to shore.

The side wave, moving left to right, was definitely operating and adding to the difficulty of getting from very shallow water to dry sand.

Really rough water, but the little crowd worked effectively and the rescued guy made it to shore undamaged.
