Thanks Cole, stoked somebody finally went fishing again!
------------------------- "I remember South Africa in the late 70's, sleeping on the beach at J-bay, smoking ganja with the blacks. On weekends we'd go to the pub in East London to drink beer and fight with the Afrikaners. They liked to fight, I liked to fight. It was a good time" |

Weird. Bait and birds everywhere, but very few fish being caught. And holy shark! The place was swarming with them. A guy plunked a bait next to the north jetty and hooked a solid Bull, which he eventually got to the beach. Another guy on the south side said they were getting sharks every other cast with bucktails at night on outgoing for pretty much the entire month of December. We ended up with a Blue, a 29 inch Red and a 25.5 inch snook, all on cut Threadfin Herring. The snook lit up for a guy using live Pig fish right at dark on the beginning of incoming, unfortunately, our bait died - hence the cut bait - before the fish got interested. All the action was at the base of the south jetty at the beginning of incoming. I went the first really cold day we had with hard NW winds, 2-3 weeks ago. Caught 1 keeper flounder on a mud minnow, a big pompano on a jing inside the inlet near the filet station and loads of blues and mackeral outside south jetty. Was on my boat trying all over. Havent been fishing since. I figured the brown/grey water would be sharky. |

The weird silty water is very strange? Is there something going on in the river?

It's been wonky since that dredging project.

Yes, the silt. I figured that would have ebbed and flowed itself away by now, guess not.

Wow, this Xmas break has been terrible for me. Weather has been trash. Was going to hit the surf to fish but now we have a heavy southerly push, usually makes fishing bad. What's with the southerly flow in December??

What's with the southerly flow in December?? I have been thinking the same thing. It's nearly January 1 and we have constant flow out of the tropics? And speaking of strange, was there even a run of flounder this year? ------------------------- I was right. |

The flounder have been there since November but they are really small, only a few door mats in the mix.

Cool you got a snook on the cutbait, no mangroves!? Mangrove bite at the inlet is heavy in the summer. Can even get muttons if you know where. I'm not telling... |

Cool you got a snook on the cutbait, no mangroves!? Yea, I was surprised too. lol Most of the bait was big; full sized Thread Fin, Menhaden, Pilchards. The smaller snook and Reds were following the Blues as they minced the bait that was too big for them to eat. I've caught some monster Reds in the 40 to 50 inch range by fishing beneath the marauding schools of Blues. Giving it a go again today. ------------------------- I was right. |

That was a bust. Too much fresh water from the canal and the most No-see-ums I have ever seen anywhere in the world. OH MY GOD!

I even got a ton of pompano rigs and lures from family for xmas. Glad I stayed at home. Edited: 12/30/2019 at 10:00 PM by HAPDigital |

It was 80 degrees at 8 PM. I don't think the fish quite know what to do when the temperatures are 10 degrees above normal and the amount of fresh water is equal to that of summer.

Two snook last night, both in slot size, but would have been released anyway. Drifted palm sized Pilchards for an hour at dark with only one hit. The snook came on a bucktail and a Bomber after dark. The guys are the end of the south were chucking big Striper lures and getting a few monster snook.
The skilled guys were getting some good Sheepshead around the rocks - bits of clam, Sandfleas, but the Blues, Reds and even Jack were nonexistent. Tom in the bait shop said there was an all-time run of Pompano four days ago. I didn't see a single one caught yesterday. Two guys were flipping small mullet by the steel, never saw them get a flounder.... or a hit for that matter. ------------------------- I was right. Edited: 01/05/2020 at 05:48 AM by Cole |
