didn't think the quality could get worse than the last time, but this shit resembles dirt more than sand. This f*cking sucks. This is gonna be the sand thats used to bury the reef too right? Really is heartbreaking to see this shit being dumped. I wonder if the sea turtles will still lay eggs in this shit.

From the Canaveral Shoals? That's been the planned source according to Army Corps documents. Geotechnical Coarser grained but with less silt than "native" beach sand. Could result in a steeper beach. The trucks suggest hauling in from the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, which might have organic material but is otherwise an ancient beach ridge. But it does seem a dredge is at work.

Dredged from the Canaveral Shoal, dumped nearshore at "tracking station" /Spessard Holland, pumped onshore with a second dredge so kinda washed twice then trucked for placement. This is the "best" sand, or so I've been told.

Damn... that sucks. Looks like the silty shit they dredge from our inlet in St. A... at least our sand is finer than yours and was a closer match )once the muddy gnarl washed away

The north jetty at Inlet will be two feet long when all this sand gets there.

Yep, when they pumped the sand during the 1st major "dredge project" here in St. A, the stuff was awful.... smelled and the was like dirty marsh mud. Most recent (smaller project) was from a shoal off the inlet and it looked like normal sand... imagine that

This is what happens when you have money hungry globalist crooks running and destroying cocoa beach. They dont give two shits what you think. they just want to pack new yorker tax payers into cocoa beach condos and turn cocoa beach into Daytona 2 with beach patrols and cops dressed in military gear.

Um, Cocoa Beach has established height restrictions and the sand was pumped from the outside sandbar to shore. This conversation is about Satellite Beach and points south.

Though i do agree with the beach patrol, that guy is a dick. I saw him race up and berate a couple for having a dog on the wrong part of the beach.

That actually worked in Cocoa Beach. I'm told the sand locks itself together because of it's similar shape.

As far as the color, what's wrong with Rocket Fuel Residual grey?

If you care about the quality of the sand, email Mike.Mcgarry@brevardfl.gov . He is being paid by the county to monitor the sand EVERY WEEK, and ensure that it meets standards. They should also post the results on the Brevard County website for public knowledge. It is our tax dollars that are funding this project. Also, writing letters to the Florida Today may help sway public opinion. If the sand does not meet standards of the project, or the artificial reef does not work then the ACOE is legally required to stop the sand dumping.

Are the studies available on how the artificial reefs are performing?

Glad to see some natural migration to these artificial reefs, but they won't create a wave for the ones we are going to lose. This will be our 3 Mile Island.

They should at least deploy their "wave shield" in a few nice triangle shapes 250 yds apart from each other for us

Thanks Tom. That report is the most unscientific report I have ever seen. There are no counts of fish, no measurement of the worm reef growing, and zero turtles could mean there is no food or shelter for them - so how could they say it meets the requirements for equaling the habitat of the natural reef? I call bullshit.

Can't say I diasgree, it's quite thin, no controls, positive or negative, no quantitative measures so no potential for comparison.Only one observation period(?) so likely underfunded.

Southern reef was doing well at the end of this summer (last time it was flat & clear), not going to say much about it, wish we could have both, the natural satty ones and the new deep water man made reefs. I surfed in front of the current project as they did the neighborhood beach, just to watch the work between sets. I think the full moon high tide combo with continuous swell has kept the sand dumping higher on shore and not in the surf, GREAT TIMING I guess for this area. Sand quality looked ok , full of small shells, ok grain size...needs to bleach...no effect on the surf (Yet)

needs to bleach...no effect on the surf (Yet)..... Maybe so, the dark coloring is off putting, it looks like dirt rather than sand.. It has already filled in our small shorebreak trough and seems to have evened off the very near shore bottom. A lot less holes and valleys between shore and the sandbar.

"Sand what sand?"

This will be the question posed in about three days time if this bizarro storm does what is predicted.

31 knot gusts at the 120 buoy, seas 8 feet and climbing.

Yep, it's doing what it was predicted to do.

I am sure the money for the "new sand" to replace the "new sand" will magically appear in short order. I hope not, I don't like throwing money into the Ocean but it would make my day to see all the new sand washed out to sea. Lets hope for lots of NE'ers this winter
