Looks like it'll shut down shortly after forming. Much too far east to be of any use,

It looks like it has an eye on satellite imaging at 3:30 est. But it wouldn't matter if it was a cat 3 hurricane right now. It's moving away and the fetch isn't aimed at us. Maybe if there was a pressure gradient in the western Atlantic but I'm not seeing anything to be optimistic about this one (except that it's June and nothing else is happening).

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of America:

Special outlook issued to update AL90 formation chances

    Central Subtropical Atlantic (AL90):

Satellite images indicate that shower and thunderstorm activity
has become better organized in association with a small gale-force
low-pressure system located about 900 miles east-northeast of
Bermuda. This system will likely become a short-lived tropical
storm later today before more hostile environmental conditions end
its opportunity for development by this evening. The low is
forecast to move northeastward at around 15 to 20 mph while
remaining over the open central Atlantic. For additional
information, including gale warnings, please see High Seas
Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.

Hurricanes have changed in a very scary way folks.
Storm season isn't as fun as it used to be.

It looks like the odd, months long up welling has ended. That's a bummer. I was hoping it would last all summer.

A new depression in the gulf. I can do without that area becoming a breeding ground for storms.

For entertainment, check Surfline for Newport Beach and/or Huntington Beach around the 4th. Should be a healthy south swell and planty of people, competent and not, in thw water.

I hid indoors this week thanks to an antibiotic that came with a strong sun warning. Now that the local drought seems over, time to plant some stuff in the yard.

The northern Gulf wet spot looks like the makings of a wet week.

Washington Post has a competent group of weather people. According to their story, it seems the discontinuation of data was initiated by Defense, not NOAA.

Defense - Hegseth and Doge

At least we still have FEMA for a safety net when when the storms come. And they will come.

I do.

DMSP is being replaced by the much more capable WSF-M and EWS programs, and this has been the plan for a long time. Legacy systems have to be shut down so that follow-on systems can be transitioned online. That's how it works, unless you want to pay for brand new ground infrastructure for every satellite system. It's not a DOGE thing.

Outside of the DOD (where it is considered nearly obsolete), DMSP data is only used by a few folks in corners of the research community primarily due to the length of the dataset. It is not important to operational forecasts, despite the quotes from the few impacted researchers, an anonymous source, and a disgruntled former govt employee. The quote from NOAA comms, on the other hand, sums up the situation pretty well.

This piece is alarmist and selective in how it presents the information, not uncommon for The Guardian.

The satellites aren't being decommissioned. The data is being cut off.

Has the EWS even been launched yet?
