Anyone know what they are building there? They've got the land partially cleared and curbs poured along Pineda. Seems like a weird place to put something.

I saw that too. That whole area is low lying. It would suck to be in that location during a hurricane because all the water being pushed into the IRL may flood that whole area.

Could it be seawall repair? from an article about the bridge over the RR tracks "Seawall work is underway at the westbound relief bridge near Patrick Air Force Base."

They cleared an S load of Pepper trees, so that's a positive, but it's definitely in the flood plain, so it must be repair work??

Ran across this...I think the land has been cleared for the Grand Canal demucking project:

"The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners (COUNTY) is soliciting proposals from qualified licensed and experienced Marine Contractors that are capable of implementing the dredging, dewatering and disposal of approximately 479,000 cubic yards of muck sediments from the Grand Canal Project Area. The dredging shall be accomplished by hydraulic dredging methods, with active dewatering. Dredge effluent will be treated for nutrient removal. A COUNTY owned parcel, approximately 8 acres, along SR404 (Pineda Causeway) will be used to receive, dewater, and load the dredged material."

Goes on to state that at the end of the project (which another local source says may take 6-8 years) the contractor must revegetate the site and restore it to its natural condition.

The other source is the SPRA "Shore News" 2019 newsletter Issue #3 which came in the mail but hasn't been posted to their website yet.

Saw that this morning. It did look like more than sea wall fixing. They are making it look like a county park may be going up but after reading the paragraph above that explains it.

Dredge effluent will be treated for nutrient removal.
Interesting. No one has a "treatment technique" for removal of ammonium (nutrient nitrogen) during onsite dewatering of muck. An educated guess would be some 20-30 tons of ammonium exists in 4-500K yds^3 of muck sediments. That ammonium will be lost entirely to the lagoon. It's the equivalent of dumping 8-12,000 bags of Scotts Turfbuilder directly into the lagoon. Anybody want to guess which bloom forming algae likes ammonium the best? Aureoumbra (brown tide) which we've got.

They put in a nice curb and are laying out a road. Poison Park on Pineda?

After most of the water flows out of the muck, trucks will haul it to Platt Ranch, at the south side of U.S. 192, west of Interstate 95, where the muck will be tilled into the ground to fertilize pastures.

Isn't that the edge of the St Johns watershed?

Platt property like all of Palm Bay west of I-95 is SJR basin but drained to the lagoon via C1-Turkey Creek. There's pumps that get Platt and west Palm Bay water pumped up into the Sawgrass Retention Area where it then feeds into the St. Johns after spending a little time in the wetland cells. But when it rains a lot the pumps don't get it all. Some will go to the SJR. Some will flow back under I-95 and head on east back to the lagoon. Kind of a shell game with the nutrients. This muck removal stuff is silly if we don't fix all the myriad upland sources of nutrients.

Not just silly, expensive. Removal of 1 lb of nitrogen (as muck by hydraulic dredging) is around $400. One lb of nitrogen as fertilizer at Lowes is about $6. Hmmmmmm.

Is it possible to block / drain out the canals and remove muck that way? (I know it sounds crazy)

So why are the taxpayers that don't even live on those canals even paying for this? Time to hike up property taxes on all those canal homeowners by 50%. just like those homeowners that want a "private beach" pay for your own damn sand when it gets washed away or forfeit your "private beach"
