I'm a gator fan and even I can't suspend disbelief long enough to believe that Alabama is not going to humiliate them. The Gators are an offensive phenom and their defense is shall we say "learning." Alabama could beat a few NFL teams. It's still a good year for the Gators.

100% agree. What a story with Trask, though - 2nd string through high school and junior year at UF, then no.1 (at this point) for Heisman. Makes me question McMullen's eval skills, though. He would still be on the bench if Franks hadn't got hurt. Sorry for Franks, but, he was a dog any time anybody got close to him. Trask is another Wuerffel with a somewhat better arm. Cool and precise, never feels the pressure. Spurrier would have had him starting by his sophomore year. Franks is Terry Dean. Spurrier to Dean - "Terry, there's no I in team and now there's no you, either." (Check out "Not Necessarily the Old Ball Coach". Freaking hysterical take on SOS by an impersonator. Especially funny if you were around in the 90s.)

SOS and Shane put a hell of a scare into Bama and ESPN had a 30 for 30 episode with title something like "The Game that almost killed conference championships". It was really, really good. (My loving Steve Spurrier may have had something to do with my appraisal. I remember his senior year when he and Jerry (head cheerleader and major babe to a 12 year old) were being interviewed after he won the Heisman, then coming home to Gainesville for 12 wonderful years. My hero.)

Auburn Malzhan fired today

Auburn says in the press release that it will pay out the remainder of Gus Malzahn's contract.

Malzahn is owed $21.45 million from Auburn, with 50 percent of it coming within 30 days and the rest paid in installments over the next four years.

It's astounding what these guys get not to play. I really need to understand these lawyers better. They are geniuses. Gus took their program to mediocre heights but I thought it had more to do with Bo Nix's mediocrity instead of Gus's. I thought for sure Ogeron would be fired for this year but maybe not after last night. Tennessee is the land of perpetual failure and I can't understand why they would ever agree to any contract beyond two years. Saban could run for senator and win in Bama. Texas keeps their coach. Mullen is safe even with trask leaving. I think Emery gets the same coaching and training trask got with similar results. The SEC looks good next year.

I turned the UF/LSU game off at halftime, but, tuned out after the first "drive". The Gators were obviously out to lunch the whole time I watched. While the shoe throwing was stupid, stupid, stupid, that is not why they lost, just why they had no chance at a miracle comeback. Our defense sucks and has sucked all year and the O was flat and could not compensate this game. Don't know if it is Grantham or the players or what, but, it is just not any good. Players out of position, players and/or coaches don't know who should be on the field, etc, etc. Just a mess all around.

I think Mullen's rep for evaluating and developing QBs is way overrated. Tebow was given to him and Prescott looks like another gift that he inherited. (It's not like he had any choices/options; he just went with the obvious.) He had Felipe Franks as his no. 1 for three years while Trask sat on the bench. And, it took two serious injuries to get him off the bench. There is absolutely NO WAY Spurrier would have played Franks for more than a game or two before going to Trask (or someone else). Mullen is overrated. I am not impressed with Emory Jones or the way he's been used the last 2 years. He looks pretty average as a runner and less than average as a passer. Sticking him in for a couple of downs in the middle of a drive usually worked against the drive and doesn't appear to have helped his development. Mullen will win 9 or 10 games a year, but, he will lose two or three in the same way he lost to LSU and A&M this year and, while we will win the East every couple of years (or maybe a couple in a row), he will never be a threat to a great team like Bama (or whoever emerges after Saban passes). He will be "just good enough" to survive.

I think the almost a great coach critique is premature. I will decide next year but every thing you said is true.

You're certainly right, but, I get this way after stupid losses. And, I've never been as sold on Mullen as others. I think he gets too much credit for essentially inheriting Tebow, who is a once in a lifetime player.

Clearly looking ahead towards 'Bama. A bit of that definitely falls on the coach.... but man that penalty at the end was all-time stupid.

The mediocre kicker clutched a 57 yard bomb in the fog. One of the best kickers in college botched one 20 yards less. The lost a goal line stand. They didnt kick the field goal on the first drive. They arrogantly saved their best receiver for the next game. That IDIOT threw the shoe. They beat themselves and probably save Ogeron's skin until next year. They also launched LSU's new freshman QB as the hope of the future.

Can't fault 'em for last night..... that was a gritty performance against a superior team

that was an entertaining game. Made Saban sweat a little bit.

If the Heisman voters watched last night's game (not many will have), they will be voting for Trask. He and Jones had the same numbers, but, Trask got his under pressure on almost every play with covered receivers and no running game to speak of. He also bulled his way to several first downs and two touchdowns. Jones had great numbers and looked pretty good too, but, his came with a badass runner to take the pressure off the passing game, soft, soft, SOFT (to non-existent) UF pass defense and no real pass rush pressure. He had all day back there to find wide open receivers. Trask is the man.

I stayed away from this thread after the game.

I knew the gators would lose, but to be beat by one score with the a trask virtuoso performance was beyond my imagination. He was cool under a huge amount of pressure. I have no idea how or why Mullen used a time out for a two point conversion when that time out could have given them another shot at the end zone. They played Alabama better than anyone this year. It was the Gator's best defense and offense yet.

I agree 100%. And, to reiterate, Trask should be ahead of Bama's Jones in the Heisman. Same stats, but, Trask had no running game, was subjected to a much stronger pass rush throughout the game and his receivers were covered. Jones had a beast of a runner, all day long in the pocket and his receivers were wide open.

The gator choke always returns. It is known, and well docudemented.

That wasn't a thrown shoe or the arrogance of benching your best receiver, it was a seasoned coach who went for the win way before the tie. It's on him.

And, just so you know, though I am a Gator, I am not a Mullen fan. Too much Urban Meyer blood running in his veins. Spurrier is the man and I would love to see us return to his acolytes and love for the university and its fans.

Spurrier was the man. He is not the man. He would pit athletes against eachother and punish them in a way that was more like gladiator school than coaching. His whole program needed that one in a million quarterback to work.

He dug deep until he found that QB. He believed that QBs were no different than any other player and should not be treated differently. Matthews was fourth string, Wuerffel second and third, and Brindise was so far down the ladder that he couldn't even see third string. He won big with all of them after replacing the studs ahead of them (Morris, Dean, Johnson, et al). Franks would have been replaced about three games into his career. He would have started intermittently after that, but, not for three years as the no. 1 while better QBs (perhaps not more talented or highly recruited, but, better) sat on the bench.

I am compelled to agree. Franks would have been a tight end.

And, perhaps a good one. He never liked to get hit or get close to getting hit (which is why he panicked at the slightest pressure), though.

One more Spurrier tidbit. I remember hearing a story about him throwing his visor on a spot and saying, "I want the receiver AND the ball at this spot at exactly the same time." It was much more important for him to have a passer who could do that rather than one who could air it out. And, he was never impressed by a reputation. He knew the qualities he wanted in a QB (smart, cool, accurate) and searched until he found that guy (or guys).

Lots of gators sitting out the bowl game. It's mighty hypocritical to ask athletes to play and risk injury and future NFL opportunities for a bowl game but it's not the team they played all year with. This is the norm now. All the best players duck out of their bowl games and that trend is getting more pronounced.

fyi, His older brother Jordan Franks was a great tight end for UCF and made it to the NFL.

So my sons were throwing the football around at the LSU game three years ago at the swamp. We saw Felipe walking around and I pointed him out as we decided that even though he looks exactly the same, Felipe was inside the stadium. My son (13) through him the ball and said "you can throw it back if you don't throw an interception." He should have thrown it in the other direction a country mile but he threw it to my other son. He's a good sport. Big lean mass of muscle.

Wow. Another case in point CFP has ruined bowl games? Players sitting out because the perception these games do not matter?

uh, come to think of it...maybe Trask should have sat out. His draft stock dropped last night...like his receivers dropped the passes.

Oklahoma came to play last night and obviously have a great defense.

Well, I take back everything I've written about the bowl games. My Gators showed they just don't matter anymore. I am ready to do away with them completely. I get the draft money aspect, but, the fact is, the players who sat out shat on their teammates. Pitts' self-serving words aired during the game made me want to puke. And, yes, Mullen is a whiny, mediocre coach. His record is built on Tebow (who he inherited and who was already a stud), Dak Prescott (who he lucked into) and nobody else. He let Trask sit on the bench until he had no choice while he stuck with Franks who, while a nice guy, was not a first rate QB for many, many reasons. I am no more enthused by him than when he was hired (and, believe me, I was not enthused then). A pitiful end to a pitiful season. I'm glad it is over.

Everybody, please eat some greens and Hoppin' John tomorrow for good luck in 2021. This one was a tough one.

That was flat out the worst game I have watched in six years. Trask threw three interceptions and not a single touchdown. Mullen decided to revel in the loss and get the third strings some game time. Completely mailed it in. The part that made me angry was that bullshit video by Pitts. I wish you luck and prayers? What was going through his mind as he watched a bunch of third strings drop passes, tip balls that got intercepted and run hand off after hand off into a brick wall. I didn't know that bowl games were just needless exercises to injure NFL prospects. So much for the future of bowl games after this.
