Not a daily February occurrence but it happens every few years. We Have reached the 90's in Florida in February many times in the past.

That is a good one. Big front blows through and drops our daily high temps to the long term average for one day.

When you have a long term dataset you have a median value. 50 percent of observations are above that median and 50 percent are below. When you subsequently take 10,000 random draws and 80 percent of them are above the median then most people conclude that the median of the sample from which the draws were taken is different from the median of the original data set.

I wasn't exaggerating either. Take May 15 to October 15; our wet season. Look at the daily minimum temperature from the Titusville, Melbourne, Vero observing stations for the last 10 years and compare to the long term record. >98% of observations over the last 10 years have been above the median. The wet season is where we have seen the biggest and most persistent shift in our weather pattern having mostly to do with the position and depth of the subtropical Atlantic ridge.

Climate is the average of weather. What do you call it when the average weather changes in one direction and doesn't change back?

True but those with more passes around the sun seemed to learn the time factor is longer for the average than the youngsters. I keep a journal that started in 1969, temps ,waves, and other factors, its a cycle always has been, always will be

We were establishing who cares and why. Your position is like that of an old man on a credit card spree that believes he will be dead before that debt has to be paid.

When measured by cooling degree days (indicate warmth), MLB is currently 2x+ normal for the month and going to climb even more with no cold air in sight.

Cooling degree what . We replaced an ancient air conditioner in 2017. We installed a 21 SEER straight cool. I looked at the ratio of HDD to CDD over the last 10 years and that was the most economical option. Used to be you'd only run a system like that along the coast south of Vero or Venice. We'll get burned in a winter like 2010 but winters like that are rare and our average winters over the last 10 years have been well warmer than in the records going back to the 1890s. Of course the big story on the east coast south of Cape Canaveral is the daily low temperatures during the summer. Huge regime shift about 20 years ago.

Plant Hardiness zone maps need to be updated, the only silver lining is Coconut Palms can now be grown in our zone with less chance of dying. Maybe Breadfruit will be next, Citrus growers worry less about freezes (but they have bigger issues such as citrus greening)..amazing how fast the temps have seemed to rise over the decades and how few N/NW swell events are lighting up S. FL in the winter, used to be at least 5 or so a winter? now lucky to get 1...Brevard will soon be Zone 10b

Persistent deeper ridging over the western Atlantic. Makes mid latitude cyclones track further west on average. Bad for swells. Keeps our weather warmer with more maritime influence and warmer sea surface temps tempering that maritime air even more. That's why we've seen more "record warm daily minimums" than any other kind of record temperature over the last 10 years. Having a damned hard time getting our "Gulf Beauty" plum to set fruit. Can't even manage 150 chill hours and we live on the cold side of the lagoon. But the orchids, bananas, and papayas are all happy. Only plant that got pissed in the last year was our mimosa lawn. August, September, October, November, and December were the driest on record and the lawn went dormant. But the two big rains we've had in the last 4 weeks woke it up and it is beautiful again. That drought would have killed un-irrigated St. Augustine.

Train's moving a lot faster than projected. The latest model updates indicate the high-end projections for this century (+2°) are now the low end, making some densely populated areas uninhabitable around 2050, resulting in a billion or more climate refugees. Some of the migrants from Central America might already be fleeing climate conditions that have displaced agricultural jobs, increased drought frequency and intensity. It isn't just a sea level rise issue. Look how quickly algae can decimate massive ecosystems and economies. "doom and gloom"

Friday night gibberish no good? I thought I'd honor Mr. Friday Night Gibberish since it was Friday night. I started with bass and switched to tilapia. The bass have spawned a few times since the winter solstice. It was interesting to find fish paired off on beds with females running ripe at the same time that there are fry balls from just post yolk sac to almost 2". Not the norm but not super unusual. UF study on hatch dates back in 2004 found December to May at this latitude. What is unusual is the tilapia spawning straight through the winter plus this is the 2nd year in a row with bream and bullhead catfish spawning in february.

UF study on hatch dates back in 2004 found December to May at this latitude. What is unusual is the tilapia spawning straight through the winter plus this is the 2nd year in a row with bream and bullhead catfish spawning in february.

Liar!

Do you think everyone is stupid?

You do know that I have a crapload of Tilapia...right?

You're an IDIOT!

So is scumbird!

"It is easy to breed tilapia in small-scale and medium-scale aquaponic systems. Healthy broodstock fish are hand-selected for breeding and are not usually harvested. The optimal ratio i.e. 2 males paired with 6 - 10 females encourages the spawning. Females may spawn every seventeen days, especially when water is warm, algae-filled and shaded, well oxygenated (>8.0 ppm), and in a calm environment.

Nothing disgusts me more about cons than their asinine denials of the basic truth of this most serious problem.
Why is it so fucking hard to just admit you were mislead, that the truth is now undeniable, and start working toward solutions that are in keeping with your core values?
This is in no way ideological. The physics belong to no party. The solutions don't have to either.

Nope a bass spawn from December to May is not that unusual at this latitude. The 5+ months of on again off again spawning is one of the neat things about bass fishing around here. You really have to pay attention to the weather and water temperature trends. Butt, 24 consecutive months with a non native tropical fish spawning at this latitude is not expected. And of course it got so hot in February 2018 that the bass spawn shut down until it cooled off again in March. That was kind of fun fishing a May pattern in mid winter.

The temps listed are for South Florida.

Last I checked...South Florida is still Florida,

IDIOT!

Also...'dipping below' 68 degrees at night isn't the same as an average of 68 degrees...BUT...you know that...right? Just because a tilapia might have a night temp dip below 68 degrees does not mean that it wont spawn the next day when it's 75 degrees.

He seriously posted air temps and told us those are water temps. Yes folks he says the average water temp has an average daily variation from 59 to 75 in January. And he is trying to claim south Florida weather for Brevard.

Those aren't air temps at the Melbourne airport. Melbourne is an average low of 53 and a high of 72. The average water temp is around 62 in January, especially with the short days and low sun angle. Water temp above 70 is 90 percent exceedance. We have spent a lot of time with the water temp above 70 in January these last few years. Saw water temps above 80F in February 2018 when ever day had a high air temp >80F and lows above 65F every day of the month for the first time in over 100 years of records.

A night where it dips below? Average low at MLB and TIX going back 100 years 12-13 C in January. It should "dip below" 68 degrees > 90 percent of nights in an average January. The average high is about 23 degrees C. The water temp in January should vary between about 12 and 20 degrees C. It spent most of January and February above 20 this year and last.
