The problem here is that what most people are wearing are face coverings, not masks in the medical sense. Most real masks and respirators have an impact. N95 masks are pretty effective but they only protect the wearer. They have a valve to release the dirty air. So, the cloth masks you make with the intention of helping everyone, help no one and the effective ones only protect the person wearing the mask. Got it. Everyone be good little soldiers though. I'm not saying I won't get it. Hell, I could die from it but if I do, you can bet your ass it wasn't because I wasn't wearing a homemade mask or a fishing gaiter. This is looking more and more like most of us are going to be exposed. I'm not counting on there being a vaccine anytime soon. That doesn't mean I'm reckless with the way I live. I'm probably much more cautious than what you are envisioning. I'm hardly going anywhere that requires me to be indoors around people other than my family. So, the same CDC who said you didn't need a mask at all a few months ago now says cloth face covers "MAY help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others." It may as in it might help. Who knows? It could, I guess

The CDC should be embarrassed for putting out statements this noncommittal and you should be embarrassed for going along with it. Anyone telling you that you should be wearing a cloth mask to protect other people are full of shit. This is just a tactic used by people who don't know shit attempting to shame people into wearing a mask. If someone calls anyone self-centered for not wearing a mask, then it is pretty easy to call them an idiot. Why? Because I can think for myself. Do you agree that an N95 respirator is probably the most effective way to prevent people from catching this virus? Do you know what the "95" in N95 stands for? "Masks ending in a 95, have a 95 percent efficiency. Masks ending in a 99 have a 99 percent efficiency. Masks ending in 100 are 99.97 percent efficient and that is the same as a HEPA quality filter." An N95 mask removes 95% of 0.3%+ micron-particles. Do you know how small the Covid-19 particles are? Covid-19 particles are 120 nm or 0.12 microns. 0.12 is smaller than 0.3. If you believe that some shit you made out of something you bought at JoAnn fabrics or a fishing gaiter that can only give you 50SPF is going to save you then you are either dumb, naive, or some combination of the two. I am amazed at how happy some people are to be told what to do, even when it makes no sense at all.

The N95 masks still can release some particles because it only protects the wearer. It still has some margin of error in whether or not it can prevent you from contracting it because it is 95% effective against particles over 0.3 microns and Coronavirus is 0.12 microns.

If you believe cloth masks filter out all of these particles then do you believe that cloth masks could completely wipe out the seasonal allergies? That's not the claim I am hearing. People are claiming that the virus is aerosolized, meaning the particles are so small they can remain suspended in air.
I can see how masks may potentially be able to affect how far the virus is able to travel but think about it like cigarette smoke because it sounds like the particles are of similar size. Just curious but how long do all you guys plan on wearing the masks? Are you committed to wearing masks in public until there is a vaccine so basically indefinitely? For the purpose of a grocery store, wearing 1 set of gloves the entire time you are in there is the exact same thing, in regards to virus spread, as not wearing any gloves at all. The second you touch something, you have to assume your gloves (or hands) have the virus on them. At that point, you stop touching your face whether your hands have gloves on them or not. The only way wearing a glove in the grocery store would have any effect whatsoever is if everyone had a huge box of disposable gloves on hand and changed them out each and every time they touched a surface or a product.

I don't know about the Instigator (snipe) and the rest of ya'll, but I don't wear gloves when I'm out. Too much to worry about.
If I touch a door, product, etc., I simply use the travel sanitizer on my belt loop on my hands, then close the flip cap, and with the excess, I sanitize the sanitizer bottle and cap. BOOM. all good. No, I wear a mask because I have the background, training, and understanding of how infectious respiratory diseases spread. Even without that, the science all supports wearing one to reduce spread of respiratory disease and absolutely not a new concept. This has been the case and proven to work for at least 100 years. |
