I guess that kind of depends on what you focus on. If we are focusing on cases then yeah, things look bad. If you are focusing on deaths, then things look better. There is a reason that the CDC decided to stop tracking the number of breakthrough cases of individuals who got Covid, who had also received the vaccine. The numbers would look bad compared to if they just focused on hospitalizations and deaths.

For example, right now we are seeing about 269 deaths per day due to Covid-19 based on what the New York Times is reporting. That puts it behind diabetes (285), Alzheimers (351), stroke (451), heart disease (2,101), and others. We have gotten better at treating Covid. The flu still kills around 115 people per day.

Travel restrictions are in place for many, if not all of the countries where variants are originating. Of course we all wish the vaccine was more widely available outside of the US, and hopefully that will change with time. The point is that the vaccine is widely available in the US, and the reasons why we're slipping backwards is because of so many Americans are passing on the vaccine, for illogical reasons. Again - the more people that contract covid, the more likely we will see mutations, which is problematic for everyone - even the vaccinated; not to mention the inconvenience of having to wear masks, social distance, avoid crowded places, put up with the economic hardships etc. I have to agree with Follydude - there is a much bigger and even more concerning picture here re: the lack of cajones and citizenship of so many, and their refusal to do what is right for the country and public good, as opposed to being consumed by their own fears of side effects. We would be f'd if this country was ever attacked.
