The stunning revelation that top administration officials accidentally included a reporter in a group chat discussing war plans triggered furious discussion inside the White House that national security adviser Mike Waltz may need to be forced out.

Nothing is decided yet, and White House officials cautioned that President Donald Trump would ultimately make the decision over the next day or two as he watches coverage of the embarrassing episode.

A senior administration official told POLITICO on Monday afternoon that they are involved in multiple text threads with other administration staffers on what to do with Waltz, following the bombshell report that the top aide inadvertently included Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg in a private chat discussing a military strike on Houthis.

"Half of them saying he's never going to survive or shouldn't survive," said the official, who like others was granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberation. And two high-level White House aides have floated the idea that Waltz should resign in order to prevent the president from being put in a "bad position."

"It was reckless not to check who was on the thread. It was reckless to be having that conversation on Signal. You can't have recklessness as the national security adviser," the official said.

A person close to the White House was even more blunt: "Everyone in the White House can agree on one thing: Mike Waltz is a fucking idiot."

Goldberg got a request to join Signal, an encrypted messaging app, from a "Mike Waltz" on March 11, according to the publication. He was then included in a group chat dubbed "Houthi PC small group" with what appeared to be other top administration officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and others.

A third person familiar with the fallout said Trump has spoken with Waltz about the matter - and the White House is, for now, standing by him.

"As President Trump said, the attacks on the Houthis have been highly successful and effective. President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including national security adviser Mike Waltz," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Monday statement. The press office declined to comment further.

A fourth White House official said they were aware of internal pressure for Waltz to own his mistake - which could mean a possible resignation. But that official said what happens to Waltz largely depends on how Trump personally feels about the matter, and noted the involvement of other administration officials in the Signal chat as well.

Two of the officials said that while Trump may lay blame at the feet of Waltz for potentially compromising U.S. national security, he could just as easily be frustrated with Vance for stepping out of line from the administration's foreign policy in the chat, or target Hegseth as the one who allegedly shared sensitive details with the group.

"I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now. There's a further risk that we see a moderate to severe spike in oil prices. I am willing to support the consensus of the team and keep these concerns to myself," Vance said, according to the Atlantic's report. "But there is a strong argument for delaying this a month, doing the messaging work on why this matters, seeing where the economy is, etc."

It has also created an opening for longtime Waltz detractors suspicious of his neoconservative ties to push for his removal. Waltz once advised former Vice President Dick Cheney on counterterrorism but, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has in recent years shifted his foreign policy views to embrace a more "America First" approach.

Those concerns were amplified on social media Monday by a contingent of isolationist conservatives who questioned why Waltz had the Atlantic editor-in-chief's cell phone number in the first place - suggesting it was evidence of Waltz's continued neocon sympathies.

And while Congress has been reluctant to cross Trump in his first two months in office, some members on Monday voiced concerns about the incident. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, said sending sensitive information over an unsecure network was "unconscionable," while Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), chair of the Armed Services Committee, told the New York Times that it was a "concern" and that his committee would "definitely be looking into it."

Defense hawks' criticism of the incident is particularly noteworthy given their perception that Waltz is their guy in the administration, a sympathetic ear in a White House dominated by "America First" isolationists.

Still, the person close to the White House who dubbed Waltz a "fucking idiot," didn't expect any widespread repercussions from the incident.

"I don't think there are any longterm political consequences for Trump or the Administration, outside of this potentially costing Waltz his job," the person said.

But many Republicans on the Hill are hoping Waltz survives. Indeed, while GOP lawmakers privately said they believed some White House official would have to take the blame, House Republicans in particular have defended their former colleague Waltz.

Speaker Mike Johnson told POLITICO that Waltz should "absolutely not" resign.

"He's exceptionally qualified for the job. He is trusted - trustworthy," Johnson said. "He was made for that job, and I have full confidence in him."

At first, Goldberg wasn't sure if the group chat was real. But soon enough, officials started sending the planned times of U.S. strikes on Yemen - and Goldberg realized they were lining up perfectly.

"I'm sitting in a Safeway parking lot, watching my phone and realizing, 'Oh my God, this might be real," Goldberg told CNN's Kaitlan Collins on Monday. "I think Pete Hegseth just sent this group actual targeting information, actual sequencing of an attack."

Goldberg went on to tell MSNBC's Jen Psaki he was glad someone else wasn't added to the group chat.

"It's interesting because as I'm reading it at 11:44 a.m. on Saturday morning, the 15th, seeing that the Houthis are not going to know about this for another couple of hours, and I know about it," Goldberg said on Inside with Jen Psaki.

Collins also asked Goldberg to respond to Hegseth's claim that "nobody was texting war plans." Hegseth's remarks come after National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes already confirmed to The Atlantic that the group chat "appears to be an authentic message chain."

A screenshot of the text chat released by The Atlantic showed that US defence secretary Pete Hegseth texted the start time for a planned killing of a Houthi militant in Yemen on March 15 as well as other details of imminent waves of US strikes.

Mr Hegseth has repeatedly denied texting war plans, but the messages include details such as weapons, the target and the target's location.

One excerpt from the messages sent by Mr Hegseth reads:

- "1215et: F-18s LAUNCH (1st strike package)"

- "1345: 'Trigger Based' F-18 1st Strike Window Starts (Target Terrorist is @ his Known Location so SHOULD BE ON TIME - also, Strike Drones Launch (MQ-9s)"

Goldberg had initially declined to publish the details of the chat.

But in his new article, published on Wednesday, he wrote: "The statements by Hegseth, Gabbard, Ratcliffe, and Trump - combined with the assertions made by numerous administration officials that we are lying about the content of the Signal texts - have led us to believe that people should see the texts in order to reach their own conclusions.

"There is a clear public interest in disclosing the sort of information that Trump advisers included in nonsecure communications channels, especially because senior administration figures are attempting to downplay the significance of the messages that were shared."

CIA Director John Ratcliffe testified on Tuesday that Security Advisor Mike Waltz set up the Signal chat for unclassified coordination and that teams would be "provided with information further on the high side for high-side communication."

If no heads roll on this, what does anyone in the Trump clown show think will happen with our allies sharing intel with us? Normally people working on classified material is required to become familiar with the applicable Classification Guides.
Class guides are a formalized document that contains what is classified and in some cases what is not classified.
I'm surprised that this hasn't come up more.
It is the bible for classification guidance.

The Original Classification Authority can classify and de classify material under their jurisdiction. Hegseth is an OCA and could declassify DoD operations as he sees fit.
However, I bet he hasn't even read the class guide or even skimmed it. The other Trump administration folks probably haven't read their class guides either.

If Hegseth was aware of this from the get go he could have make a more logical argument that normally pre operation information is classified but he declassified it for this operation.

The use of Signal is still a problem.
Even if it was unclassified it was CUI material and that still has to be marked and handled through approved channels.

Donald Trump's most important security advisers used Signal to discuss an imminent military strike. Now, reporting by DER SPIEGEL has found that the contact data of some of those officials, including mobile phone numbers, is freely accessible on the internet.
Private contact details of the most important security advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump can be found on the internet. DER SPIEGEL reporters were able to find mobile phone numbers, email addresses and even some passwords belonging to the top officials.
Those affected by the leaks include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Most of these numbers and email addresses are apparently still in use,

The chat was also notable for who it excluded: the only military attendee of the principals committee, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Adm. Christopher Grady is currently serving in that position in an acting capacity because Trump fired former chairman Gen. CQ Brown Jr. in February.

National security adviser Mike Waltz was authorized to decide whether to include the Joint Chiefs chairman in the principals committee discussion, "based on the policy relevance of attendees to the issues being considered, the need for secrecy on sensitive matters, staffing needs, and other considerations," the White House said in a Jan. 20 memo.

The Pentagon said it would not comment on the issue, and it was not immediately clear why Grady, currently serving as the president's top military adviser, would not be included in a discussion on military strikes.

Trump plugged along for the first two years of his first term with true politicians and professionals. Then he fired them all and replaced them with yes men. He had a 33% approval rating at the end of his term.

The Atlantic's editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg is weighing the release of more chat logs from the Trump team's Houthi strike group chat he was mistakenly added to - as ranking officials denied under oath Tuesday that the information was classified, and the White House attacks his credibility.

Speaking to The Bulwark's Tim Miller on Tuesday, Goldberg said while he remained reluctant to, he was weighing whether to now release more of the chat transcripts.

"There's a covert CIA operative named on the thread, right?" Miller prompted.

Goldberg confirmed this was the case
