The Kissimmee River smelled like an open sewer two weeks ago. But then again, most ranches have converted to sod farms and sod farms use biosolids for fertilizer. Grass is huge business in a state with uncontrolled growth.

The Kissimmee River is at flood stage right now and that is without tropical weather influence. If a real storm hits, Central Florida will need a life raft.

Remember when the state made best management practices voluntary and put the program under FDACS? Big difference between "shall" and "should"
Also the fight against numeric nutrient criteria, fertilizer regulations, and let's hear it for septic tanks Enjoy the sludge and algae everyone |

There are some good things going on that should help the lake in the long run.
The Kissimmee River restoration project was recently completed, or is very near completion. I think they're just finalizing the regulation schedule for the upper chain of lakes. A 200K ac-ft reservoir is going through the federal red tape process. A couple thousand acres of wetlands are being restored just north of the lake. But I think the ASR wells, a significant component of stormwater storage in the original CERP plan hit a bump in the road. The state is mandating pretreatment to drinking water standards before injection. |

The state is mandating pretreatment to drinking water standards before injection. For the last few years they have been holding the water in Lake Kissimmee. On average, the water above lock S65B is 8 to 10 feet higher than it is on the rest of the river. To me, it make more sense to keep it on the floodplain to use natures filtration system. Storing it in dirty Lake Kissimmee, then jamming it down to dirty Lake Okeechobee makes no sense. ------------------------- I was right. |
