Greetings,
Wanted to get this info out to more people. This organization https://www.teamorca.org/ in Vero is collecting fish from the IRL, dissecting them and finding out what is in them. They will make findings public. The preliminary info can be found here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMP18Wale1k However, they need more fish from Brevard. Indian River County is doing better at providing fish, and more species of fish. As well, your kid (or you) will get service hours for providing legal size fish. Five hours for a fish. The legal fish should be frozen and dropped off at Man Overboard Bait and Tackle. A few quick general reminders-- . We are unable to use unlabeled fish, so be sure to label your fish clearly with the following information either with a sharpie on the outside of the ziploc bag or with a piece of paper inside the bag with the fish: i. Collector and contact info ii. Date of collection iii. Location of collection iv. Fish species . Please double check that the fish that you are donating are legal and in season. If you are unsure, FWC's website is a really good resource to help you out: https://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/. . We have a few awesome upcoming opportunities for our Fish Project both online and in person: o March 10 at 6 PM -- One Health Fish Project Summary of the Findings to Date Webinar (this will be an update on what we have accomplished with this project thus far -- if interested, respond to this email and I can share the Zoom link) o March 11 at 6 PM - Intro to One Health Fish Monitoring & Collection Webinar (Highly recommended for anyone who has just started or may want to start volunteering) ? Pretty cool they have the area mapped out with some sort of sensors to measure water quality, would love to see one in CB on one side or another of minuteman causeway, maybe behind the school/ball fields so the kids can get involved either way looks like good work!
