FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Port Charlotte man didn't let the big one get away.

Bucky Dennis caught a 1,280-pound hammerhead shark Tuesday in Boca Grande Pass.

Dennis was alone on his boat when the nearly 13 foot animal took the bait -- a 25-pound stingray.

A friend on a nearby vessel climbed aboard Dennis' boat to help with the catch.

Dennis said they finally got the shark on the boat after about five hours.

1262 lbs

I live over where these are being caught. With all the bait that is close to shore you can go and see sharks off the beaches every day.

The scary part is seeing people swim through the bait pods and commenting on all the "pretty little fish".

Is it possible for a shark that size to be captured alive. That would have been a great aquarium fish, at least that would have been better than being a lab rat.

That's freaking crazy. Could you imagine seeing that fin come up outta the water? At least they donated this one to science. The other one lived a long life only to reside in an orange grove and be picked apart by raccoons and oppossums.

For years and years there has been the tale of "Hilter" a huge hammerhead that trolls the inlet at Boca grande and eats tarpon....looks like ole Hilter finally got caught. I'd of taken pictures and cut the line, no surfers around there!! Now that Tiger off of IHB, caught and eaten!!

When I worked as a diver in San Salvador we used to get lots of of Hammer heads in the winter time. Hammerheads are considered a "Man Eater" but in my experience they were always quite docile.

The first great hammer head I saw swam between my group (of beginners) and the reef wall. The shark was quite large and swam by only about an arms length away. No one freaked out, no one got bit, no one was scared. When we got back to the boat no one had a bad thing to say. Everyone thought the shark was beautiful.

I spent that winter season swimming with lots of hammer heads and even got a chance to pet one of them. At no time were any of the sharks aggressive towards me.

It is sad for me to see that shark tied up and people prying its mouth open to see its teeth. That is a beautiful creature, and man destroyed it.

no, actually the record is still held in indanalantic, my friends grandfather, it was a hammerhead, but this one weighed in about 1200-1400 pounds, caught just off the coast of indianalantic. He has the mouth part in his house. holy crap, that thing could eat micheal moore in one bite.
we were out fishing yesterday at grosse point near boardwalk, we were getting some good bites, we got this small one first

we used that as bate, we got a bigger one but lost it all. :-\[/IMG]
