The DNA testing is interesting. Ancestry and 23andMe give somewhat different interpretations; I think Ancestry's enormous data resources give it an advantage.

It seems that much of the region including France and present-day Germany has a pretty thoroughly mixed population, so they may not be able to nail down locality info. The ability to do that in Britain and Ireland seems greater, and they absolutely nailed my Ostrobothnia family, a Finland coastal strip on the Gulf of Botnia centered on Vaasa. Placed the Slovaks a bit more loosely. I seem to have an ancestor born in Virginia in 1620 and a whole pile of them a bit later.
