Does anybody catch anything casually surf fishing around here anymore?
I've been skunked so many times. I've kind of given up. Miss it. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill Edited: 08/04/2022 at 09:43 AM by WG |

I've gotten away from it too. Used to catch a lot just out front, black drum, sheepshead, big whiting. Seems like after they brought in the sand the fishing fell off.

There has been a ton of filamentous brown algae in the surf this late spring into summer. I don't fish much but hear that it's really shut it down. Don't know if this stuff is just cyclic or a little coastal eutrophication result. Regardless, it's kinda yucky to surf in.

yes weeds make it tough but catch and release snook and tarpon can be good this time of year. other than that the once the water gets to 75 or below you should get more whiting and pompano

The beaches are heating up! Snook, tarpon, sharks, macs, and other various species starting to hit the bait pods that have started to show.

Masses of glass minnows moving slowly to the south at Patrick today. The small sharks and Tarpon were harassing them and there was some showering from below that was either flounder or Whiting. Some of the largest Whiting I've ever caught came from under glass minnow schools on fresh cut shrimps.
The seaweed is finally gone from the Inlet and the Mojarra are there in mass. We got some nice Mangroves and my son got a 40lb Goliath on his baitcaster, which was fun to watch. It ate a silver dollar sized Mojarra and took him to the edge of the channel and back from the north rocks. Snook were absolutely everywhere, but the water is clear, so the daytime bite is difficult at best, even on live bait and 25 lb fluorocarbon. ------------------------- I was right. Oh, and someone snagged one of our rods while we were dealing with the Goliath on the rocks. It's a custom Crowder rod named Steve with a black Quantum Smoke reel and camo Spyderwire braid.
