I could have swarn the waves were better every year for the past 7-8 years, actually as far back as I can remember. It's october now. WTF. Late summer/fall is usually the best time year somebody fill me in. I've never seen it this bad this time of year.

Fingers crossed for a good winter surf season. I have a feeling (maybe just desperate hope) that it will make up for our nearly non existent hurricane season

I disagree....there have been a ton of ride-able days all year.  It seems like I've surfed as much or more this year than I can remember in past years.

i agree with dan... i surfed a lot this year and the waves have been good a lot of the time

but i'm not beach side every day

although, i do have a friend that literally surfs every single day and i am sure that when
it's flat, he brings out the fishing poles.

and he's barely used his fishing poles

I don't know how you could even debate that this has been anywhere near a normal season. It's been so bad I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the planet or something because us stupid humans f'd it up.

We have not had a major North swell with good conditions in a very long time. The last memorable swell that comes to mind is Sandy. It will happen again, be ready and patient.

Right now I'm in the Jax beach area. I've lived here and in central Florida (Surfed mostly Satellite beach) but have surfed everything from here to Sebastion inlet. Everything along this stretch had been relatively consistant as far back as I remember, not necessarily needing a big name swell to have rideable, and even good surf. I remember most weeks averaging surf at least a few days a week from the end of august until the next June hit. Of course there are flat spells here and there but nothing like this.

I've been surfing over 20 years and this hurricane season was slow last two years but outside of that has been pretty darn normal.Rideable maybe couple days a week....People have been bitching about Florida surf forever and Usaully move if they want to surf "real waves"

+1 -I agree. It has been rocking for the long board. Insane wave counts.

This year was better than all of 2013 by like March. You might just be dealing with sandbar changes at your favorite breaks.

He may live down south. I talked to a guy in the local surf shop who chronicles the surf each day - and he was saying this was the worst year for this area since '73.

This year has looked good for the 2L area, but the Gulf and South have been weak. Amazing how much difference 100 miles can make.

^^ Good point....there were a few unfamiliar faces at my home spot last weekend (usually we all know everyone in the water), turns out they were from somewhere down south.  They were frothing over our little swell last weekend saying they haven't had waves in months.

Absolutely correct. Alot of people like it small and will always say it's better than it was. Obviously there weren't that many swells this year and it's been smaller than usual. We are in October now so we should start getting more swell.

A garbage year so far if you like waves with some punch. Decent year for the small wave equipment though.

Last year was horrible, I don't think we got any hurricane swells. This year although still slow we got three solid swells with each having one excellent day thrown in. Bertha, Cristobal, and Edouard all produced great surf although not enough. Tons of small days which thanks to a QF Pylon have been a blast.

I would say the last 3 years have been absolutely terrible for the most part.  I really onlly make the effort now if it's going to be chest and up since having kids.  Those days have been much less frequent then in the past.  Sure we've had a few swells here and there but the consistency just hasn't been there.

+1 But don't forget Arthur's waves. Every storm this season has produced. Which is rare.

Only five named storms.
Ummm.... that doesn't mean much when Eduard was really good, others were not nearly as good. Dolly was non-existent (unless you live in the Gulf and like small mush). In all reality, it hasn't added up to much, if you like waves with balls.

as far as decent size, we've only had a couple swells this year. Seems like under 5. The rest has been grovel in the waist high zone.

I happen to agree! small!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the bouncey thing can't seem to grow past three feet of a good 10 + sec swell. I agree too that, plenty of rideable days with the right log.

In all the jet stream is the cause?.... Thank god its fall!

We have not had a big winter swell since winter of 2012/13. I think spring of 2013 was last big N swell.
And no large tropical swells since 2012 hurricane season.

In melbeach, the dunes are pretty built up and the sea oats have had some time (and rain) to really set in.

This year so far seems alot choppier than years past. Every day we have 10-15 mph onshores. It seemed like it went from calm summer winds to front winds like nothing. I think this saturday might be the only forcasted offshores for the next week and its supposed to be gusting up to 19 according to MSW.

My opinion is crap year.  I am a grom at heart and will and do surf one foot waves  but I can separate that joy from reality.

How many days with buoy over 5 ft?

How many more than one day swells in the last 6 7 8 months?

Hmmm?

On the brighter side there could be a nor'easter or hurricane or Bermuda triangle swell any day now.

The best swells (as of late) that I remember being in the right place at the right time were:

TS Berryl in Melbourne just throwing inside thick barrels with heavy North tilt,

and Hurricane Sandy down in south florida where we couldn't surf friday/saturday in PBC bc it was too big. Then sunday-tuesday were just epic Delray Beach every day. Caught some of the best waves in Florida that I've ever seen on the tail end of that swell (Monday/Tuesday)

I would pay big money to replicate those swells again

Tropical storm beryl was some of the best surf I have seen in 20 years. may 28 2012. It was average waist high and off shore for about 9 days before the storm waves even hit. It was coming into sheppart park at chest to head, off shore, and waves hitting the beach at about a 35 degree angle out of the north east on the big day. perfect long board surf.

SFL has certainly had a ridiculously lame few years (even winter). Imo, no one in CFL or NFL should be whining about a lack of waves. I've caught a fair share of rideable surf upcoast so far this year.

This thread illustrates Florida crap waves to the bone, people literally talking about swell frequency in YEARS and each swell event being 2 days if lucky.

No Florida surf has not always been this bad, I remember tons of days of good surf. This year has been on an entire different level of flattness like the gulf or something. It seems like ever since Sandy the storms have been mysteriously dying out or turning away from the coast.  If I was a conspiracy theorist I'd say the government controlling the weather lol.. jk, no really..just kidding.. but really though though wtf is going on here?

James Wieland, the meteorologist for TV 5 in West Palm Beach thinks there's hope.  Part of his Friday video & text:

PRELIMINARY WINTER SURF OUTLOOK UPDATE

OCTOBER-December: October looks like it's setting up for some good swells, November may slow down, then December winter may kick in and give some good winter swells.
January-February: Turning very cold,(maybe like 2009-10) with many opportunities for solid groundswells/ refraction swells galore.  Hopefully you bought that toasty wetsuit because you'll be using it a lot.

So we might actually not be completely skrewed this year, keep your figures crossed. I will be just as happy if we get a strong late fall/winter out of this.

Well.. Who knows. Maybe it's just a fluke and a crap year, maybe we'll get a stronger winter and spring, maybe we're skrewed forever.  All I know is there's been a major difference lately. I feel like I'm in the gulf or something. We better get some waves this week.
