Ha. true. Last year my brother gave me a 9' Penn Battalion surf rod.... feels so nice and light and sensitive compared to my old meat sticks. Put a Shimano C5000 sedona on it for tossing lures. The "C' is for "compact" about the same size as a 4000..... I save the ugly sticks for soakin clams now

I was wondering what size reels to put on the new style surf rods. I have my old tarpon/offshore stuff on the clumsy surf rods and they weigh about 42 pounds each. I'm not even sure I have a fish half the time. Fricken ridiculous. I left a little gaff top soaking for 10 minutes and the poor thing must have taken a beating, because I kept setting the hook, thinking I was getting a hit. He did get me back by tangling the drop rig up so bad, he had to be cut free.

I fish light rods from the beach. All single piece 7'-8' rods reels 2500-5000. Long surf rods are ridiculous around these parts IMO. Our trough is deep just feet from shore and full of sea life. Am I missing out not casting way out? Maybe, but I never have to deal with reeling in a ton of line. Rocks are the problem here. I've tried everything. You lose rigs no way around it.

We need to get above the surf line in Cocoa Beach and I like to use the inside of the outside bar, as well as the shore side of the trough. In the flat summer, I'm with you, it's small spinners only.

Unfortunately, up by me (StA) the beach is shallow and flat (aside from up in vilano area) so I do have to cast far..... but I agree, those old big clunky rods suck. Cole, don't need a reel bigger than 5000, you could go smaller, and use braid....... speakin of fishing. Took the yak out this morn to paddle off my hangover (garage beers disappeared FAST last night) pretty slow, water was dirty..... 1 15" flounder (on a slayer paddletail), so at least I got some dinner

If I am going to catch a single fish, a keeper flounder it would be.
Excluding offshore of course, that would be a single giant YFT.

This winter I caught all my keep flounder (2) while snook and red fishing. I went 4-5 times just for flounder, nothing but shorts.

Damn, I doomed myself! We tuna fished on Sunday and there were no birds. We found one pack at 100 miles, got one 70 pound YFT and never saw another fish, bird, board, fish-able weeds or a damn thing.
