Originally posted by: HAPDigital I fish light rods from the beach. All single piece 7'-8' rods reels 2500-5000. Long surf rods are ridiculous around these parts IMO. Our trough is deep just feet from shore and full of sea life. Am I missing out not casting way out? Maybe, but I never have to deal with reeling in a ton of line. Rocks are the problem here. I've tried everything. You lose rigs no way around it.
Unfortunately, up by me (StA) the beach is shallow and flat (aside from up in vilano area) so I do have to cast far..... but I agree, those old big clunky rods suck. Cole, don't need a reel bigger than 5000, you could go smaller, and use braid....... speakin of fishing. Took the yak out this morn to paddle off my hangover (garage beers disappeared FAST last night) pretty slow, water was dirty..... 1 15" flounder (on a slayer paddletail), so at least I got some dinner

If I am going to catch a single fish, a keeper flounder it would be.

Excluding offshore of course, that would be a single giant YFT.

I was right.

This winter I caught all my keep flounder (2) while snook and red fishing. I went 4-5 times just for flounder, nothing but shorts.

Damn, I doomed myself! We tuna fished on Sunday and there were no birds. We found one pack at 100 miles, got one 70 pound YFT and never saw another fish, bird, board, fish-able weeds or a damn thing.
