New Dems are probably going to go after Trump's tax returns. But, at this point in time, for what? There is no legal requirement for Trump to release his returns.

>>>. Writing in Yale University's Notice & Comment, Andy Grewal summed up the legal justification that Democrats in the House may use to support their request for Trump's tax documents.

"The statutory authority for any congressional requests would probably come from Sections 6103(f)(1) & (2) of the tax code. Under (f)(1), some committees of Congress can request disclosure of Trump's returns and can examine those returns privately. Under (f)(2), a non-partisan career official, the Chief of Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), may also request and privately examine those returns," Grewal wrote.

He noted, though, that courts have ruled that a request to see returns must serve a public, not just a political, purpose. <<<

Because it is the honest ethical thing to do, and at this point withholding them is super shady.

It will be funny to watch Trump claim no one cares about his tax returns and that his election was a popular mandate to disregard any request from the crooked press or the sore liberal losers.

He won't. He will sue, try his case on Fox and claim he's the only one who ever had to do this, which is true if you don't count everyone who volunteered to do it since 1968.

He went from: Absolutely in 2014/2015 to hell no in 2016. I don't think he expected to win the election and when he did he had to to a lot of backtracking. For fun you can read his tax return evolution here: https://money.cnn.com/2017/04/...tax-returns/index.html

I'm curious to see the Deutsche Bank/Russian connection and how that is represented. Putin has something on trumpy, and trumpy's admitted love of living for debt and defaulting on loans and not paying people has some pretty deep roots with that bank.

And he pays no taxes. Somehow under capitalism it's cool to be a billionaire and also be losing so much money on paper you shouldn't be taxed like a real worker.

He shouldn't release them. If they are good enough for the IRS then they should be good enough for everyone else. None of you are going to find anything wrongdoing on his taxes that the IRS overlooked.

The left is looking for legal loopholes he may have used to limit his tax burden. Pretty much everyone I know who pays taxes at tax time each year, instead of receiving a check, looks for legal ways to limit their tax burden.

Exactly. If I incur $200 thousand in hospital bills and can't pay, I will end up in a tiny apartment or homeless. Trump, on the other hand, can make terrible business decisions, lose countless millions, yet still keep living in his gold house and pay zero taxes for decades.

"He shouldn't release them."

He can release them or break another law by refusing to follow the court's order. And he should've released them, like every president before him, in recent history. He is our employee, and owes us full disclosure to prove he doesn't have financial conflicts of interest. It's obvious he does though, and that's why he's fighting and lying.

That's interesting that sniper thinks the IRS is capable of doing more than determining if his income is correctly taxed. They will not question his shell corporation's ownership or cash infusions as long as it's reported. The reporting might be copacetic but the sources remain deliberately murky. That's why that argument that if it's good enough for the IRS, it is good enough for us doesn't work. Also, since when did the conservatives endorse the IRS as government organization that they trust enough to do anything? Much less trump's shell game?

Okay, then. The Ways & Means committee already has access to all this. Let them investigate it on their own and report any wrongdoing they may see.

That's not what Democrats want. They want to find something that they can use to confuse dumbasses on their own side. They want Republicans to have to waste their time defending themselves over things that are a complete waste of time.

The story was he wanted to release them to show everyone how smart he was to not pay taxes, but some of his cronies told him that wouldn't look too good to Joe Sixpack.
Then I think there's a point were he just becomes an obstinate child and digs his heals in. He has to "win", it's all he's got.

So the Dems are seeking to confuse the electorate and trump is hiding this information that he promised them to keep them from being... confused. And you believe that?

If we gave your tax returns or my tax returns to the partisan hacks salivating over the idea of getting their hands on Trump's tax returns, then I'm pretty sure they could destroy us too. They will tar and feather him for taking advantage of legal loopholes etc. None of us pay more than we are legally required to.

I would be interested to hear 3rdworld's definition of "beholden to". Are we just going to prevent anyone who has ever done a significant amount of international business from ever being President again because it is probably too messy? That's what it sounds like you guys are advocating.

Isn't about him using loopholes to dodge taxes. It is about how he managed to borrow money again after the Taj Mahal bankruptcy scam. Who loan him money and who did 'deals' with him while his brand was 100% junk bond status. That is what he wants to hide, not clever accounting. Doesn't matter though. Taj Mahal scam was made possible by his dad illegally loaning him millions of dollars by "buying" poker chips. That was used to inflate the apparent cash flow and let them keep the creditors at bay just long enough to take the company public and dump the insurmountable debt on dupes. Daddy paid a fine for that poker chip 'loan'. But Trump's fan base love that sort of scamming so nothing in his tax returns matters, no matter who holds his notes right now or what shell companies like those two Mongos that got arrested for election fraud are filtering funds through Trump property.

Ensuring our representatives aren't beholden to foreign interests is the complete opposite of a waste of time. It's critical and should be mandatory before anyone can enter office.

It doesn't bother you that the game is rigged to benefit the wealthy elites (trump, clinton, epstain, whomever)?

I think you're just defending your team. You'd be pissed to see the clintons not pay taxes, or pelsoi. Your boy? Oh that's a witch hunt.

If you disagree with loopholes then change the laws. Don't try to take a Schiff on people for taking advantage of them.

What would make you think that Donald Trump doesn't pay his taxes? LOL Google the phone number of the local IRS office immediately and fill them in!!!

It's not loopholes that trump fears being exposed, it's shell corporations laundering cash through his properties.

"Former President Donald Trump's tax records have been turned over to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. following the Supreme Court's rejection of the ex-president's last-ditch effort to keep the documents shielded."

Its getting hotter at Maralago.

But Trump always said he was going to turn them over eventually anyway right? SO this was inevitable.

Uh, he's not president anymore. The only reason your side wanted them was to twist them to use against him politically. So, a little late.

Maybe. But, they aren't going to have any impact on his supporters either way. It will allow the press to attack Trump for a few weeks, even if his returns are pure as the driven snow. That might excite progs, but no one else will pay attention.

Liberals are very excited about the tax returns, be a good sport and let them have their moment.

It's probably the least of trump's worries since he's so far in debt.

Oh I don't begrudge them that. It's kind of like bread and circuses in Rome. If they are amused by it, it will keep them from causing more serious mischief.

If you care about "LAW AND ORDER," then this would apply to you.

Prosecutors will be able to look at the evidence and see if the filings rise to financial crimes. Yes, CRIMES. Which crimes? Investigations include:

>criminal tax fraud
>hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels
>money-laundering
>intent to defraud the government
>using the powers as president to make money for himself
>receiving money from foreign sources

Don't worry, this isn't the last we'll hear about this subject...

He said he would release them after he was done being audited, silly.

He then went on to play the victim and sighed that he is constantly under audit, poor guy.

Oh, we know. Progs will be talking about Trump, Russians and tax returns for the rest of their natural born days. I envision a time when you freaks will be shuffling along on the sidewalks like the homeless lunatics, mumbling to yourselves such things as "but Trump was in league with the Russians," "he promised he'd disclose his tax returns," and "he called a Ukrainian president though - how can you get away with that?" We'll feel sorry for you and largely leave you alone. But every now and again, we may amuse ourselves by beating you with sticks, throwing dog crap at you and engaging in other harmless pranks. Don't take it personally though.

He said only suckers pay taxes. Smart guys like just don't pay taxes. He can't wrap his uuuge brain around the idea of a shared burden borne by the citizens for everyone's benefit. He sees government as law enforcement for political means. He squandered 140 million dollars of our taxes golfing.

I don't know about you, but I too try to pay as little as is legally possible. Despite all the sanctimonious caterwauling you hear from billionaires about how their taxes should be raised, I have never heard of any of them donating to the federal gov't. So I don't think Trump and I are along in that sentiment.

Yes. That is the way it works with public things.
I have never heard of any of them donating to the federal gov't.
See your statement above. It is call the "Free Rider Problem" in basic economics. Nobody is going to pay more than their obligate share for public goods that benefit everybody. It is why taxes to pay for military and police and road upkeep and the intracoastal waterway etc... aren't voluntary. Your statement and that impulse in general are why people that think that higher taxes for something don't donate but instead campaign to have everybody chip in. If everybody doesn't chip in then nobody does and anybody that doesn't when they are legally obligated is cheating. There are some nice "game theory" illustrations of the principle.

The low tax mantra means shitty schools, crumbling roads, crime, and lack of public services.

Funny, the same people who hate taxes are also the ones who bitch loudest if there's a line at the DMV or their CCW takes too long to process.
Fools want something for nothing.

Not factual. Ca. Has shitty schools, crumbling roads, crime and lack of public services. It also has the highest taxes. The infrastructure in Florida is top notch. In any event, both you and I pay as little taxes as we can.

California has great schools, some of the best in the world and their infrastructure is spot on; they even know how to handle snow and cold. lol

Tourists pay for our infrastructure, but if you think ours it top notch, you don't get out very much. There are highways all over the state that have been under construction for decades. Up until six months ago, I dodged potholes on 441 for years. One was on a button hook turn and when wet, would throw cars off into the woods. If you doubt what I'm saying drive by and take a look at the memorial sign for a guy who died at the exact spot.

Biden releases tax returns. Let's see how the GOP can attack Biden while strenuously ignoring the last guy's empty promise to release his and all that he kept hidden.

Justice Dept. says IRS must give Trump tax returns to Congress

In a memo dated Friday, Justice's Office of Legal Counsel said the committee chairman "has invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President's tax information" and that under federal law, "Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee."

So what's there to worry about? Inflating values to obtain loans (which he invariably defaulted on) then deflating declared values on tax returns iss strictly verboten.

"I'll release my tax returns".

"I'll release my tax returns one the audit is complete".

Lie #3,823 and lie #6,451, respectively.

All lies.

The entire T'rump Administration was one big lie.
