Bernie was the best chance of winning in November for the Dems. His exit will also mean the exit of a large group of young and left leaning people who do not consider the center right Democratic party to me substantially different policy wise than the Pugs. But I don't see that as the most likely outcome. It will be 2016 all over again. And perhaps that was the plan all along.

Bernie fucked up by running in the Democratic party, again. He should have learned from 2016 that the DNC is neither fair nor democratic, and that he is not a Democrat.

As a 3rd-party candidate, it's clear Bernie would have split the Dem vote and handed the election to Trump, but most of his fans agree that's how it's playing out anyhow. If he had run as a 3rd-party candidate, he could probably have turned in a better performance than Teddy Roosevelt. It would still have been a loss, but with enough attention to give the 3rd-party movement a boost. Moreover, in sticking it out for his base (youth and progs), he would have given them hope and a reason to stay engaged in the process, building a stronger new party, and paving the way for some future prog to have a real shot at the WH. But yeah, he blew that.

Anyway, I agree with Rusty that with 20+ states still having not held their primaries, the process is not very democratic at all. That can be changed by state legislatures without having to amend federal law at all.

Personally, I'd like to see all states hold a first primary on the same day, early in the year, and use ranked-choice voting to advance the top 3 or 4 to the more traditional (now secondary) primary about 4 months later.

When you get to presidential debates for the final/general election, there should be room for about 5 candidates (R, D, and typically Libertarian, Green, and a true NPA). Let them carry that load thru all debates until November.

Campaign finance reform so all 5 have the same budget and can't buy an election. Implement a balanced-budget amendment first, so nobody is pushing policies without details on how to pay for them.

In the general election, we could only hope states prohibit faithless electors, and distribute electoral votes in the same proportion their population voted.

If states remain with winner-take-all EC votes, push for more states to use ranked-choice voting. Changes are easier at the state level than federal.
