New Zealand Surf Journal talked to Seventhwave, a Christchurch wetsuit manufacturer, about neoprene, among other things. Also used and reviewed wetsuits from Rip Curl, O'Neill, and Need Essentials.

Two things,

1) I keep coming back to Rip Curl and yes, they're tight if you go by the sizing chart.
I buy one size larger, a Large Short even though I'd be a Medium on the chart.

2) I'm fascinated by the "limestone neoprene": CaCO3 to CaO via high temp oxidation.
CaO + 3C -> CaC2 + CO, then use the carbide (CaC2) to make acetylene, dimerize and
halogenated to make the chloroprene for neoprene.

Ya, but where do the 3Cs come from? The only reference I see is that they typically come
from petroleum coke. In other words, it's a petroleum hydrocarbon byproduct wetsuit, not
a limestone one (?) Doesn't sound nearly as attractive.

And then again, I could be wrong...
(curse the lack of line breaks)

I don't know why I can and some can't but at least it looks better.

The Rip Curl E Bombs always feel a bit tight at first but they always break and become much more soft by the end of the season for me. Rip Curl and Xcel make the best off the rack neoprene imo. Theres always the boutique ones but I'm not paying $600 for a suit lol

The japanese limestone based neoprene has been used in freediving suits for years. But they are also a little different with fit. you need to lube yourself up to get in them. any one seen these yet https://www.quiksilver.com/men-highline-pro-1mm-wetsuit/?npk=356843144&heid=5e93049dba04a65a0f5df2c314843361d8db8a79be82119e3db5f700a3d7c1a2&camp=em_qs_us-en_e_neolane_193-highline-pro-wetsuit_-_all_wetsuits_-_broadcast_10032019&utm_source=adobe_campaign&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=193-highline-pro-wetsuit&bxid=356843144

$700 for a suit that is 1mm thick but equal to a 3mm with more flex . Good for water temps 56 to 64 , but seems to have limited size selections available

The Highline Pro website looks overwhelmed by visitors and looks close to a sellout. Only a bit more expensive than Hurley's made-in-Japan 3mm wettie that supposedly can cover 4mm territory.
