It's feasible to have a good camera kit without going broke. I've had good luck buying used lenses and refurbished camera bodies and lenses. The camera and lens I used were bought refurbished from Olympus at one-day flash sales; you need to get on the mailing list to catch them. Equipment helps, but there was great photography in the days of no autofocus, no auto-exposure, and expensive film on little rolls of 36. And color film was slow. How did they ever catch surfing in color? One of the benefits of shooting is review. Looking at a long string of photos, movie-style, in Lightroom or at even short video clips shows elements of technique/style that you miss when watching live.
