...May 2019 Was Much Warmer Than Normal Across East Central
Florida...

A very warm and moist air mass in place for the first half of May
led to several days of showers and storms across east central
Florida as the east and west coast sea breezes moved inland during
the afternoons. A couple of weak fronts also moved through the area
bringing another couple days of showers and storms. A strong ridge
of high pressure and a dry airmass then dominated the weather
pattern the second half of the month, leading to an extended hot and
dry weather pattern across the region. Despite well below normal
rainfall during the second half of May, all of the precipitation
early in the month produced rainfall totals for areas generally
south and east of I-4 to be wetter than normal for the month.

...Temperatures...

A couple of cool fronts moved through the area during May but did
not really offer much in the way of cooler temperatures. In fact,
only a few days had temperatures at or below normal across the area
while all other days saw above normal temperatures. High
temperatures generally ranged from the mid 80s to low 90s across
east central Florida, but high temperatures soared well into the mid
to upper 90s across inland areas during the last week of May.
Onshore and southerly winds kept low temperatures well above normal
with most nights only falling anywhere from the mid 60s to low 70s.
Locations along the coast had a few nights of only falling into the
mid 70s. A brief reprieve in low temperatures was felt toward the
middle of the month after a cool front moved through allowing lows
to fall into the low to mid 60s before lows returned to the upper
60s to low 70s. Several record warm minimum temperatures were either
set or tied.

Average temperatures for May ended up being 2 to 3 degrees warmer
than normal across the area, with the exception of Ft. Pierce being
1 degree warmer than normal. Melbourne`s monthly average temperature
ranked as warmest on record for May, while for Sanford it ranked as
2nd warmest. Elsewhere, the average temperature for May 2019 was 4th
warmest on record (tying 2003 and 1962) at Orlando, 6th warmest at
Daytona Beach, and also 6th warmest at Vero Beach (tying 1975).

-May 1st: Tied record warm low of 73 degrees last set in 1970.
-May 2nd: Record warm low of 73 degrees. Previous record was 71
degrees set in 2010.
-May 3rd: Tied record warm low of 72 degrees last set in 2010.
-May 27th: Record high of 98 degrees. Previous record was 97 degrees
in 1967.
-May 29th: Tied record high of 95 degrees last set in 1990.

Sanford:
-May 2nd: Tied record warm low of 72 degrees last set in 2010.
-May 3rd: Tied record warm low of 73 degrees last set in 2010.
-May 12th: Record warm low of 73 degrees. Previous record was 71
degrees set in 2015.
-May 28th: Record warm low of 75 degrees. Previous record was 74
degrees last set in 2018.
-May 31st: Tied record high of 99 degrees set in 2004. Record warm
low of 76 degrees. Previous record was 75 degrees set in 1998.

Orlando: No daily temperature records set.

Melbourne: May 8th: Tied record warm low of 76 degrees last set in
2014.
-May 9th: Record warm low of 77 degrees. Previous record was 76
degrees set in 2014.
-May 10th: Record warm low of 77 degrees. Previous record was 76
degrees set in 2014.
-May 23rd: Record warm low of 78 degrees. Previous record was 76
degrees set in 2017.

Vero Beach: No daily temperature records set.

Fort Pierce: No daily temperature records set.

Average temperatures for May 2019 at the primary climates across
east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in the top
10):

- Daytona Beach had a monthly average temperature of 78.0 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 3.0 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
6th warmest average temperature for May on record at this site, with
records extending back to 1923.

- Sanford had a monthly average temperature of 79.9 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 2.7 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
2nd warmest average temperature for May on record at this site, with
records extending back to 1948.

- Orlando had a monthly average temperature of 79.8 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 2.5 degrees above normal. This ties as the 4th
warmest average temperature for May on record at this site, also set
during May of 2003 and 1962, with records extending back to 1892.

- Melbourne had a monthly average temperature of 79.4 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 3.1 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
warmest average temperature for May on record at this site, with
records extending back to 1937. The previous record was 79.1 degrees
set in May of 2017.

- Vero Beach had a monthly average temperature of 78.1 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 1.9 degrees above normal. This ties as the 6th
warmest average temperature for May on record at this site, also set
during May of 1975, with records extending back to 1942.

- Fort Pierce had a monthly average temperature of 77.1 degrees
Fahrenheit, which was 1.0 degrees above normal.

...Rainfall...

The daily sea breezes combined with a very warm and moist air mass
allowed for several days of showers and storms through the first
half of the month. A couple of fronts and upper-level disturbances
also resulted in some additional days of showers and storms. Almost
all of east central Florida saw well above normal rainfall the first
half of the month with some locations receiving greater than the
normal monthly May totals through May 14. The dominant ridge of high
pressure the second half of the month resulted in very dry
conditions, but with such a wet pattern early in the month, most
locations still finished the month with near to above normal
rainfall. Finally, on the last two days of the month the dominant
high pressure began to break down allowing isolated showers and
storms during the afternoon and evening. A couple daily record
rainfall records were set on May 5th.

-May 5th: Record daily rainfall of 1.15 inches. Previous record was
0.96 inches set in 1931.

Sanford: No daily rainfall records set.

Orlando: No daily rainfall records set.

Melbourne:
-May 5th: Record daily rainfall of 1.08 inches. Previous record was
0.59 inches set in 2005.

Vero Beach: No daily rainfall records set.

Fort Pierce: No daily rainfall records set.


May 2019 rainfall totals for the primary climate sites across east
central Florida are as follows (ranking provided if in the top 10):

- Daytona Beach received 1.95 inches of rain for the month, which
was 1.18 inches below normal.

- Sanford received 2.54 inches of rain for the month, which was 0.63
inches below normal.

- Orlando received 4.34 inches of rain for the month, which was 0.89
inches above normal.

- Melbourne received 5.74 inches of rain for the month, which was
2.45 inches above normal.

- Vero Beach received 4.45 inches of rain for the month, which was
1.09 inches above normal.

- Fort Pierce received 3.91 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.08 inches above normal.
